Shortly before we departed for Berlin, I received word of a one-day symposium, open to the public, being hosted by the Berlinische Galerie on the theme of collage in the twenty-first century. It seemed auspicious timing, given that my dissertation was on women and montage in the Weimar era, so I spent this past Friday listening to a variety of scholarly papers on multidisciplinary understandings of collage–in art, music, literature, and even science. As at most conferences, some papers were clearly better than others, but I was pleased to be able to understand quite a bit of what was being discussed (in German, obviously).
