I was very pleased to be asked to write this year’s catalogue essay for the XX/V exhibition. XX/5, organized by Elizabeth Stevenson at Fisch Haus Galleries, is the fifth such manifestation of the show. An invitational, XX bi-annually features five female artists, each artist selected by a woman from the previous exhibition. This genealogical type of “tagging” structure, which began with the work of five Wichita-area artists, has now extended so far afield that only one artist in XX/5 still hails from Kansas, with the others based in Tennessee, California, Canada, and Germany. It was another strong showing, and I can only hope that Elizabeth maintains this biennial for years to come. (The show is closed now, but catalogues are still available at the gallery.)
