After completing certifications in programs from the Adobe Creative Suite, I’m planning for the fall in earnest. I’m very much looking forward to the design foundations class, which will be a combination of hands-on learning and critical thinking about issues in design theory. The class will mix lectures, tutorials, labs, discussions, guest visits, and even some films (two in particular from the Gary Hustwit trilogy). Friends and colleagues have shared many good suggestions for readings, so really the hardest part will be narrowing it down to a manageable load for students. It looks like the class make-up covers a wide range of majors – art, communications, business, social work, and natural sciences, which should help make for some interesting discussions and a variety of perspectives.
